I am a guitarist, composer and music teacher based in Christchurch, New Zealand. I studied classical guitar performance at the New Zealand School of Music with Dr Jane Curry and Matthew Marshall, and I graduated with a BMus in 2012. I co-founded ‘Wellington Music Lessons’ in late 2012, and I’ve been sought after as a teacher ever since. My students have won awards in competitions, excelled in Trinity and ABRSM exams, and successfully auditioned for and studied at the New Zealand School of Music.

My compositions were first published by SOUNZ in 2019, and they’ve been performed by a number of musicians throughout New Zealand. Cameron Sloan performed my Sonatina, Five Wellington Landscapes, Dorian Sketch, and Lydian Sketch, in various concerts throughout Wellington and Christchurch in 2020 and 2021. I premiered a composition of mine for guitar and piano (A Garden in the Forest) with pianist Sunny Cheng in Wellington in late 2020. Yifan Sai performed my composition Dorian Sketch in the Biennial New Zealand Classical Guitar Competition in 2022. I played in a guitar duo with Nick Price in 2022, and we performed one of my compositions and a number of our own arrangements. In 2023, Chris Everest extensively toured New Zealand and played a programme of solo guitar pieces by New Zealand composers. The second movement from my Sonatina was the first piece on his programme. In 2025, my composition ‘Peace of War’ was featured as the last piece on the programme in concerts with Lora Kurusa. A number of my compositions are currently being prepared for performance throughout New Zealand and overseas.

While I was a classical performance student at the New Zealand School of Music, I performed extensively throughout Wellington and New Zealand. Highlights included performing with the NZSM Guitar Quartet in the Michael Fowler Centre, and a mini-tour of the North Island. After focusing on teaching and composition for five years, I returned to performing in 2018. I won prizes for my performances of my own compositions at the Biennial New Zealand Classical Guitar Competition in 2018 and 2020, and I won the NZAG award in 2020. Winning this prize entailed a solo recital for the Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School, and a masterclass with Slava Grigoryan. I performed Westlake’s ‘Antarctica’ and Tedesco’s ‘Fantasia’ with pianist Sunny Cheng in Wellington in 2020. Nick Price and I arranged, performed and filmed Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque in 2022. Cameron Sloan and I gave a concert in Christchurch in 2023, and our own compositions for guitar duo were featured in our long and eclectic programme. Lora Kurusa and I performed concerts in Christchurch and Hamilton in 2025, featuring Spanish and South American music, as well as my own composition ‘Peace of War’. I’ve given many solo performances and recitals throughout New Zealand, playing my own compositions as well as standard repertoire.
